Overview

Qatar's post-FIFA 2022 World Cup infrastructure has made Doha a modern, well-connected city with about 180,000 Malayalee residents. The country has the highest GDP per capita globally, and though the cost of living has risen, earning potential remains strong. Recent labor law reforms, including the partial dismantling of the kafala system, have improved worker protections.

Visa & Residency

Work visas are employer-sponsored. QID (Qatar ID) is mandatory. The new minimum wage of QAR 1,000/month applies to all workers. Exit permits have been largely abolished — workers can leave without employer permission. Permanent residency is available for select foreigners who meet specific criteria. Visit visas on arrival for Indian passport holders.

Jobs & Employment

LNG/energy sector (QatarEnergy), construction, IT, healthcare, and hospitality drive employment. Salary packages typically include accommodation or housing allowance. Gratuity is 3 weeks' basic salary per year of service. Qatar Foundation and Education City offer academic opportunities. The free zones (QFC, QSTP) attract international businesses.

Cost of Living

Doha is relatively compact. The Pearl, West Bay, and Al Sadd are popular residential areas. Rent for 1-2 BHK: QAR 3,000-6,000/month. Al Meera and Lulu Hypermarket for groceries (QAR 800-1,500/month). Ooredoo and Vodafone for telecom. The Metro system has made transportation much easier post-2022.
