How to Get Iqama in Saudi Arabia: Complete Process Guide

Step-by-step guide to getting your Saudi residence permit — from medical tests to biometrics to Absher activation.

2026-03-14

The Iqama (residence permit) is the single most important document for expats in Saudi Arabia. Without it, you can't open a bank account, rent an apartment, drive legally, or even buy a SIM card. Getting it right from the start saves you months of frustration.

Here's the complete process from arrival to activation.

What Is an Iqama?

The Iqama (إقامة) is your Saudi residence permit — a biometric ID card that proves you're legally authorized to live and work in the Kingdom. It's tied to your employer (sponsor) and must be renewed annually or biannually depending on your visa type.

Your Iqama number becomes your identity in Saudi Arabia. You'll use it more than your passport for daily transactions: banking, hospital visits, traffic fines, Absher (government services portal), and Muqeem (sponsor services).

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Entry Visa and Arrival

Before you arrive, your employer obtains a work visa from the Saudi embassy/consulate in your country. This visa is typically valid for 90 days — your employer must complete the Iqama process within this window.

Documents your employer needs from you before arrival:

  • Passport with 6+ months validity
  • Attested educational certificates (apostilled/HRD attested as per Saudi requirements)
  • Passport-size photos (white background, 4×6 cm)
  • Police clearance certificate from your home country
  • Employment contract signed by both parties

  • Step 2: Medical Examination (GAMCA)

Within 2-3 days of arrival, your employer should arrange your medical exam at a GAMCA-approved (GCC Approved Medical Centers Association) facility.

    Tests include:

  • Blood tests: HIV, Hepatitis B & C, syphilis, malaria
  • Chest X-ray: tuberculosis screening
  • General physical examination
  • Drug screening (for certain job categories)

  • **Timeline:** Results take 2-5 working days.

**Cost:** SAR 200-400 (usually paid by employer).

**If you fail:** Certain conditions result in deportation (HIV, active TB, Hepatitis B). Others require treatment and retesting. Talk to the medical center about specific conditions.

**Pro tip:** Get your medical done in India before departure through a GAMCA-approved center. This is faster and if any issues arise, you can address them before traveling. GAMCA centers exist in major Indian cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Hyderabad.

    Step 3: Biometrics and Fingerprinting

After medical clearance, your employer schedules biometric enrollment at a Jawazat (passport office/immigration) facility.

    What happens:

  • Fingerprint capture (all 10 fingers)
  • Facial photograph
  • Iris scan
  • Verification of passport and visa details

  • What to bring:

  • Passport (original)
  • Medical clearance certificate
  • 4 passport photos
  • Employment contract
  • Employer's CR (commercial registration) number

  • Step 4: Iqama Issuance

Your employer (sponsor) applies for the Iqama through the Muqeem portal. The employer handles most of the paperwork, but you should verify that all details are correct:

  • Name spelling (must match passport exactly)
  • Profession/job title (must match your visa)
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Sponsor details

  • **Timeline:** 1-4 weeks after biometrics, depending on Jawazat processing speed and your employer's efficiency.

**Cost:** SAR 650 for a one-year Iqama, SAR 1,300 for two years. This is your employer's legal responsibility to pay, though some employers illegally deduct it from salary.

    Step 5: Absher Activation

Once your Iqama is issued, activate your Absher account immediately. Absher is the Saudi government's online portal for all personal services.

    To activate:

    1. Download the Absher app

    2. Visit a Jawazat kiosk or the Absher activation desk at the nearest passport office

    3. Register with your Iqama number, mobile number, and email

    4. Set up your password and fingerprint verification

**Why it matters:** Through Absher, you can:

  • Check Iqama expiry date and renewal status
  • Apply for exit/re-entry visas
  • Check and pay traffic fines
  • Book appointments at government offices
  • Verify dependents' visa status
  • Report changes (mobile number, address)

  • Step 6: Saudi Bank Account

With your Iqama, you can now open a Saudi bank account. Major banks for Indian expats:

  • **Al Rajhi Bank** — Largest Islamic bank, best remittance services to India
  • **Riyad Bank** — Good digital banking, competitive transfer rates
  • **NCB (SNB)** — Largest Saudi bank, extensive ATM network
  • **SAB (SABB)** — Good for corporate employees

  • **Documents needed:** Iqama (original), passport copy, salary certificate from employer, passport-size photos.

    Iqama Renewal

Your Iqama must be renewed before it expires. Late renewal incurs fines:

  • First time: SAR 500
  • Second time: SAR 1,000
  • Third time: deportation possible

  • Renewal requirements:

    1. Valid medical insurance (Iqama cannot be renewed without active insurance — your employer must provide this)

    2. No outstanding traffic fines or violations

    3. Payment of renewal fee through SADAD (Saudi payment system)

    4. Updated medical if required (depends on profession)

**Timeline:** Apply at least 3 months before expiry. Your employer initiates renewal through Muqeem.

**Your responsibility:** Remind your employer. Many companies have multiple employees and renewals fall through the cracks. An expired Iqama puts YOU at risk, not your employer. Set a calendar reminder 90 days before expiry.

    Common Problems and Solutions

**Employer delays processing:** Some employers are slow. If your Iqama isn't processed within 90 days of arrival, your entry visa expires. You become illegal. Push your employer firmly — and document all communication.

**Name mismatch:** If your Iqama name doesn't match your passport, get it corrected immediately. Mismatches cause problems at banks, airports, and hospitals. Correction requires your employer to submit a request through Muqeem.

**Profession listed incorrectly:** This affects your ability to change jobs under the Saudi labour reform. If your Iqama says "laborer" but you're an engineer, request correction. This matters for future career mobility.

**Lost Iqama:** Report immediately through Absher or at the nearest police station. Replacement takes 1-2 weeks. Fine: SAR 1,000 for first loss. Carry a photocopy always; keep a clear photo on your phone.

**Employer refuses to renew:** This happens when companies face financial difficulties. If your employer won't renew your Iqama, file a complaint with the Ministry of Human Resources. You have the right to transfer to a new sponsor.

    Life After Iqama

With your Iqama active, you can:

  • Open a bank account and start sending money home
  • Get a Saudi driving license (Indian licenses can be converted with a driving test)
  • Rent an apartment (you need Iqama for rental contracts)
  • Buy a SIM card with data plan
  • Register your vehicle
  • Sponsor dependents (wife, children) if your salary meets the minimum threshold (currently SAR 4,000-5,000 depending on profession)
